Most people are familiar with the plight of
unwanted dogs and cats. Kittens in plastic bags on the side of the road or
puppies found in dumpsters with their legs and mouths bound by tape, are now so
common that it hardly stirs the emotions of most people. But many don't realize
that other pets, including birds, ferrets, rabbits and reptiles, often face a
similar fate.
Just like some dogs and cats, not all parrots are loved
and cared for properly by their keepers. Parrots don't roam free, or left
tied up in the backyard, so the public doesn't see the thousands of neglected
birds living in dark basements, garages, closets and other out of the way hidden
places, isolated and locked in cages.
According to Parrot Trust, parrots are now the second
most popular pets in America. Overpopulation, unethical breeding (parrot
mills), and the inevitable, abuse, neglect and even abandonment.
Before you consider adopting any pet, do some
research and be sure that the pet suits your lifestyle and pocketbook.
Monthly expenses of owning a feathery friend can range anywhere from $40.00 to
$90.00 per month and this does not include the initial cage purchase or the
yearly veterinary, emergency care, or boarding costs while you are on vacation. Unlike a cat or dog adoption, many of these birds will live from 30 to 100 years
so make sure that a bird will fit into your lifestyle now and into the future.
Every animal deserves a permanent, loving home,
with humans who understand and respect their needs. If you're thinking about
adding a parrot to the family, consider adopting one through a rescue group,
such as Foster Parrots, Ltd
. They rescue abused or unwanted birds from
both retail and private situations, and are always in need of good, permanent
homes for the birds. They also provide help and advice for current or
prospective bird owners.
