ST. AUGUSTINE - The St. Augustine Humane Society confiscated 44
dogs from a kennel where the animals had to stand in excrement and had
only slimy water to drink, the organization said.
None of the animals, which included pregnant females, had to be
destroyed, but Tina Walker, director of the agency said the conditions
were the worst she has seen in 20 years.
Ms. Walker said the animals included cocker spaniels, basset hounds, a
bulldog and other purebred dogs.
The dogs were in protective custody at Humane Society shelters in St.
Johns and Flagler counties and with veterinarians who offered space.
Animals in protective custody cannot be adopted.
Ms. Walker said the agency got a tip about the dogs and said a complaint
