An elderly man, apparently warmed by his dog during a cold night in the woods, was rescued when the dog led searchers to him.
George Gresham, 82, fell and could not get up when he went into the woods Sunday afternoon. His Australian shepherd, Big Boy, got the attention of a search team Monday and guided them to him.
"The dog definitely helped us," said Trent Putman, chief of the Killen Volunteer Fire Department. "We had a feeling that if we could find the dog, we could find him."
Joe Shanes, a Colbert County sheriff's deputy, rode into the woods on horseback following Big Boy and spotted the missing man's boots.
"Then I saw him raise his head and worked my way to him," Shanes said. He said Gresham, who was taken to a hospital, had cuts and bruises but was able to talk.Gresham was listed in fair condition Tuesday.
Shanes said it appeared Big Boy had stayed with Gresham through the night, possibly helping him stay warm as temperatures fell into the mid-40s.
Gresham was found at a site about 200 yards from his trailer home.
"We were close to him all morning long, but he didn't have the strength to call out," said Putman. "It was so thick out there it was hard to see anything at all. Even from the air, you couldn't see a lot."
Gresham still had Blue Eyes on his mind when searchers reached him. "The first thing he said was, 'Where's my dog?'" said Shanes. 1999 The Birmingham News. Used with permission. AlabamaPeople and Pets a Healthy Relationship Elderly Benefit From Pet Ownership
