Those "Rascally
Wabbits" are everywhere
According to Elmer Fudd, Warner Brothers Cartoon Character
The rabbit as we know it has existed
and been recognized in all places in the world at one time or another. Rabbit
fossils have been found dating back 30-40 million years. Evidence is available
to suggest that the Phoenicians were responsible for exporting the rabbit to
Spain in 1100 B.C.
Rabbits with their cute
characteristics are mentioned often in folklore. Everyone knows the Easter Bunny.
Rabbits have even been looked upon
as a symbol of fertility because of their undisputed
ability to multiply.
What child in America, young or old doesn't
know of Bugs Bunny? Roger the Rabbit was a big hit on
the Big Screen.
As I go for a leisurely stroll or watering the flowers, I
often see countless of bunnies hopping around. What should you do If
you come across a nest of bunnies in your backyard and the mother is no where to
be seen? What ever you do please DO NOT disturb them, this is normal.
Rabbit mothers nurse their babies for approximately 5 minutes a day. They will
be in the nest early in the morning and then again in the evening. The milk is
very rich and the babies "fill up" to capacity within minutes. Wild rabbits do not make good pets. They are wild
spirits that will choose death over captivity and some may carry zoonotic
diseases. All across America there are orphaned bunnies waiting for a human to call
their own. These domestic bunnies need a second chance for happiness and a
caring home. Though you may care about the wild
baby bunnies hopping about, unknowingly you may be contributing to their
suffering and even death. House cats that roam outside will kill about every
other time they go out. And unlike feral cats that hunt because they are hungry,
and kill immediately, house cats maul and torment their prey, sometimes skinning
baby bunnies alive.Providing a bell on your cat will help warn the wildlife
of an intruder. Lawn chemicals are another
hazard and can produce convulsing death in baby rabbits. According to the Poison
Control Center for Animals, lawn applications that contain herbicides are not
directly toxic to small animals; but they may make toxic plants more palatable
to them and may make the animals sick for a few days.
If you do discover a nest of
wild rabbits and truly believe it has been abandoned or injured the best thing
you can do is to contact aWildlife Rehabilitatorin your area, your
veterinarianorlocal humane societyshould be able to give you this
information. Though, you may mean well and want to help "rehabilitate" the
bunnies, the reality is fewer than 10% of orphaned rabbits survive a week, and
the care that people attempt to provide can be illegal, unnecessary, and
potentially harmful.Rehabbers on the other hand are specially trained to
properly care for wild animals and work toward the goal of successfully
returning the animals to their rightful home - the wilderness.
